DuckTales is one of the most beloved cartoons of the ’80s, and a large part of that was thanks to the iconic theme song, which has kept kids "woo-oo"-ing for decades, even after the show left the air.
So when Disney XD announced it was rebooting the cartoon with an all-star cast that includes David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, Bobby Moynihan and Lin-Manuel Miranda, we were all curious about what the reboot would do with the show’s theme.
When the original song’s writer, Mark Mueller, was approached to hear the new version, he admitted that he was "nervous," but ultimately thought that the reboot’s team did "an amazing job." Mashable has an exclusive look into the making of the new theme song above, and you can listen to the new rendition and check out the opening credits below.
"It’s sort of a thrill for me that thirty years later, kids who listened to the song originally are now gonna listen to it with their children," Mueller notes in our making-of featurette. "It doesn’t get better than that."
Disney XD has also announced the premiere date for the reboot: DuckTales will be back on our screens with a one-hour television movie to be presented for 24 consecutive hours on Saturday, August 12, beginning at midnight ET/PT on Disney XD. Then, the series will debut with two new episodes on Saturday, September 23 (airing at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., ET/PT). The episodes will also be available on the Disney XD app and Disney XD VOD on the same dates.
Featuring a distinct animation style inspired by the classic Carl Barks’ comic designs, the DuckTales reboot chronicles the high-flying adventures of Duckburg’s most famous trillionaire Scrooge McDuck, his mischief-making triplet grandnephews – Huey, Dewey and Louie — temperamental nephew Donald Duck and the trusted McDuck Manor team: big-hearted, fearless chauffer/pilot Launchpad McQuack, no-nonsense housekeeper Mrs. Beakley and Mrs. Beakley’s granddaughter, Webby Vanderquack, resident adventurer and the triplet’s newfound fierce friend.
The story unfolds as Donald Duck reluctantly takes Huey, Dewey and Louie to the home of their reclusive great-uncle Scrooge McDuck. Enthralled by their once-legendary great-uncle and the wonder of McDuck Manor, the triplets and Webby learn of long-kept family secrets and unleash totems from Scrooge’s epic past, sending the family on an adventure of a lifetime to the Lost City of Atlantis.
All we can say to that is "woo-oo!"
